mate-desktop software package provides Library with common API for various MATE modules, you can install in your Ubuntu 14.04 LTS (Trusty Tahr) by running the commands given below on the terminal,
$ sudo apt-get update $ sudo apt-get install mate-desktop
mate-desktop is installed in your system.
Make ensure the mate-desktop package were installed using the commands given below,
$ sudo dpkg-query -l | grep mate-desktop *
You will get with mate-desktop package name, version, architecture and description in a table
